PERSONAL ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION & PERSON SPECIFICATION

JOB TITLE: PERSONAL CARE ASSISTANT

JOB LOCATION: BASED AT CLIENT’S HOME ADDRESS

CONTRACT TYPE: CASUAL CONTRACT FOR WORK AS REQUIRED

HOURS/SHIFTS: FLEXIBLE (usually after school/holidays/weekends and/or sleep-in shifts with your own room)

HOURLY RATE: £10/hour + reasonable expenses with an increase after the first year if feasible given award

REPORTING TO: Michelle Jani (client’s mother)

About the Employer:

We are a very friendly single parent family living in Hove at the moment. My son is 12 and has a severe learning difficulties, requiring support with all activities of daily living including personal care, eating and drinking and support in the community to access recreational and social activities.

I would like a PA who will support the family both inside and outside the home to live as inclusive a life as possible in a variety of community and social settings.

A fluid and efficient working dynamic with me and an understanding that I am the primary caregiver and advocate for my son is essential in this role.

Nature of the Work:

We are looking for a PA with a family centred approach, energy and enthusiasm as well as the ability to be sensitive to the needs of a child who has no words but can communicate in many ways. You will have a good sense of humour and an ability to interact with our son on his level. You will be helping him in and around the home and outside to access play equipment safely, facilitating interactions with other children, his personal care and social outings such as swimming, the zoo, the farm etc. A willingness to learn new things is essential; as is a calm and level head under pressure to prioritise tasks, mitigate flashpoints with health and safety in mind to ensure a high standard of care for the client and his sibling.

We hope you will become an important part of our son’s life and share a long-term view of him as a person moving towards maximising his potential and independence.

Typical tasks will include:

· Supporting the client with any and all activities of daily living as required including:

o Personal care (pad changing, washing and bathing)

o Helping with dressing/undressing

o Eating and Drinking

o Ensuring client’s physical and emotional safety, health and well-being at all times.

o Supporting the client to communicate and express his needs in an appropriate way/support with sensory regulation/carrying out physiotherapy activities.

o Trips out into the community for social and recreational purposes (including swimming, trips to the park, festivals, shopping soft play, support groups, horse riding etc.).

· Supporting the client’s mother as required with:

o Laundry, loading washing machine/hanging out to dry/folding/putting away.

o Making/changing beds.

o General cleaning/dusting/vacuuming to ensure all areas remain tidy and hygienic.

o Occasional cooking, regular housekeeping tasks: washing up, putting dishes away, cleaning surfaces.

o Supporting her on trips out with children into the community/respite holidays/short breaks

· The ideal candidate will be:

ESSENTIAL

o Respectful of the family’s privacy and confidentiality

o Reliable with good time keeping

o Able to both follow instructions precisely and work under own initiative

o Hygienic, tidy minded and well organised

o Fit and healthy to undertake the required duties

o Be patient and possess excellent interpersonal skills

o Honest, sensitive to others, kind and cheerful

o Be able to speak English to a good standard

o Legally permitted to work in the UK

o Able to work at all times to high standards of Health and Safety.

DESIRABLE

o Good working knowledge of Makaton/Communication Books/AAC/PECS/approaches to Total Communication

o PROACT-SCIPr-UK® (Positive Range of Options to Avoid Crisis and use Therapy, Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention)

o A clean full drivers licence

o Able to anticipate, mitigate and/or deal with challenging behaviour read non verbal communication

o Able to use computers/technical AV equipment

ALL CANDIDATES MUST BE WILLING TO UNDERTAKE AN ENHANCED CRB CHECK AND WILL BE ISSUED WITH EMPLOYMENT CONTRACTS SUBJECT TO A 3 MONTH PROBATIONARY/TRAIL PERIOD.
